Kimmel Center

Graphic Design Practicum—a multi-disciplinary studio open to upper level students
[design and architecture consulting for the Kimmel Center]
Students in Graphic Design Practicum reinvisioned the public spaces of Philadelphia’s performing arts venue, the Kimmel Center. Working with PennPraxis the clinical research arm of PennDesign, The Penn Project for Civic Engagement, the COO of the Kimmel Center, and a studio of industrial designers at the University of the Arts, the students used input from four public forums, along with their own research, to develop six principles to guide their work. Concepts for immediate change such as new furniture and lighting were explored in drawings and plans as were significant graphic and architectural interventions such as exterior supergraphics and a new Spruce Street facade. After considerable design development, three approaches to enlivening the Kimmel’s public spaces were presented to over 200 citizens. Feedback gathered from citizens was incorporated into a final set of next steps presented to the Kimmel Center’s board of directors in a 100-page report.

Urban Nutrition Initiative

Graphic Design Practicum —a multi-disciplinary studio open to upper level students
[interpretive graphics for the Urban Nutrition Initiative]
Students in Graphic Design Practicum, working with PennPraxis the clinical research arm of PennDesign, designed information panels to tell the highly charged story of the displacement of an African American community in West Philadelphia known as Black Bottom. The installation site is a wooden gateway to a working garden farmed by UNI and University City High School students at the heart of old Black Bottom. Interviews and engagement with community leaders, former residents, historical archives, Penn staff, and the high school garden crew informed the design of the information to ensure that all voices were represented.

IEU Vitrine

Freelance design for the Fashion Design department [Exhibition Vitrine design]
A collaboration between Visual Communications students and the Fashion Design department to create supergraphics for an exterior exhibition space. The aim of the fashion students was to use inspiration and detailing from other cultures as a starting point for designing jackets. The graphic solution was to focus viewers eyes solely on the features of the jackets through individual port holes. Design by Aylin Guvenen and Cansu Kiziltan.
